Hi friend,
These are the four types of therapists, from the worst to the best:
The therapist who neither empathizes nor empowers.
The therapist who empathizes but does not empower.
The therapist who doesn’t empathize but empowers.
The therapist who empathizes and empowers.
If these therapists were to place honest ads in a newspaper, the ads would look like this:
Worst therapist:
I’m afraid of my own pain — please don’t expect me to empathize with yours. How could I empower you with self-care practices when I don’t know how to take care of myself? I make my living following useless protocols, but since I’m financially secure and society sees me as a good person, I don’t plan on abandoning these protocols anytime soon. So if you want to waste your time and money, call 11111111.
Bad therapist:
I want to know everything about your life. I love listening to people — it fulfills my own need for connection. I hope you will enjoy our sessions for as long as possible in my flower-decorated, essential oil-infused office, and that you will see me as a lifelong empathetic presence who will always validate all your feelings and thoughts forever and ever. So if you want to become needier and needier and never actually get your sh*t together, call 22222222.
Much better therapist, and actually worth paying for:
I don't care about your life. I don't want to listen to you whine. I hope our sessions will be as brief as possible in my visually insulting, dead-rat-smelling office. But if you want to be empowered with simple and science-based self-care practices that can positively impact your mental health for a lifetime so you can quickly get out of my face, call 33333333.
But this one is the absolute best:
I strive to find the most effective, simple, and scientifically supported self-care practices for psychological well-being and flourishing, and I organize my life around these practices. Taking good care of myself allows me to offer a kind, supportive presence to my clients, and to empower them with the self-care practices I know to be helpful in ways that are scientifically proven to be effective. So if you're looking for empathy and effective empowerment, call 44444444.
🙏💛
PS: Don’t actually call…
Thank you for being part of my life’s mission.
Everything I offer to this Mental Health Revolution is free and will remain free. I write all the articles, and only use AI to help me with the spelling, grammar, and word use. I welcome your concrete and specific suggestions for improvement.
The Nazi formula is, “You are all being threatened by [ABC] and if you refuse [XYZ] you are irresponsible and expose everyone else to danger.” Please recognize this message when you see it.
Take care of yourself. You deserve to be healthy, happy, and free — regardless of what parts of your subconscious may say. Taking care of yourself is a wise investment — when you feel better, you show up better and everyone benefits. There are simple, natural, and science-based practices that can make a real, positive difference in your mental health. There are ways to implement these practices that increase your chances of success. And you can learn about all of these.
